What I Learned This Week - 10/18/13

  1.  The iPhone 5S has a program glitch that causes its own version of the “Blue Screen of Death”. You have no idea how happy this makes me.
  2. Best graffiti on a bathroom stall I’ve seen in a long time, “Three things I hate: (1) Vandalism, (2) Irony, (3) Lists”
  3. For Calvin & Hobbes fans, “Dear Mr. Watterson," a Fingerprint Films documentary about the creator's relatable comic strip and its impact today will be released in limited theaters on November 15th. Watch the trailer here (http://bit.ly/1g3AB2Q). I’m probably more excited than I should be.
  4. I don't see an obvious logical progression to the development of the word "Queue". Why are there letters required after the first?
  5. The first cell phone call was made 30 years ago this week. That phone weighed almost 2 pounds – and it did not fit in your pocket or have the game “snakes” on it.
  6. No matter how old I get, I still want to drive the Zamboni.
  7. Computer scientists have discovered that the average tweet has reduced in length by 5-8 words since 2009. This means either twitter is altering language or people are becoming more efficient at what to say or we’ve completely run out of anything interesting to say.
  8. I grinned when I first heard it associated with the release of the Galaxy Note, but I love that the term, “Phablet” - that describes, large, awesome, HD phones - has become mainstream. Now, I can hate it.
  9. Every week it seems my college physics textbooks are proven incorrect – the greatest power of man is prayer. Nothing beats that.
  10. I am surprised with that amount of “exercising” that I do, I can still find ways to make myself unable to walk for several days. This week they are called “long tempo runs”. Ow.
  11. Best t-shirt in the gym this week read, “Train like you've been picked for the Hunger Games”
  12. If a stranger tries to high-five me, I will respond with a turkey every time. (For those confused, follow this link: http://bit.ly/unLBhu). Ok, I do it with just about anyone these days.
  13. My kids now have me doing the fist bump snail. I predict very similar reactions to #12.
  14. Now that it’s allowed and very easy to do, I have way more fun than I should leaving photo comments on Facebook posts. No, I don’t see an end in sight.
  15. Many more people than I realized opt not to Facebook “like” things in fear of the barrage of e-mails and pop-ups that follow with some posts.
  16. There is a special place for people that put out a snack consisting of unpackaged M&M's and Skittles in the same bowl. It’s not a very good place.
  17. The mark of good memory is being able to remember a birthday without a Facebook reminder. Sadly, I need ten different reminders on various devices just to remember my own.
