What I Learned This Week - 2/14/14

  1.  I think little girls like the annual Daddy-Daughter dance as much as they like birthdays.
  2. I agree that all shark movies should end with “fin” instead of “the end”.
  3. I’ve gotten to the point that I only listen to voicemail to get rid of the annoying blinking light or icon on my phone.
  4. Gold medals from Sochi are made from 516 grams of silver and 6 grams of gold. A melt value of $562.56 USD
  5. In order to get the claimed high score on the Android version of "Flappy Bird" (over 9 Quintillion points), one would have to play for just over 570 billion years, 9 days, 11 hours without making a single mistake. Since the game was only released a few weeks ago, I’m beginning to think someone may have cheated. I’ll have to play a little longer to be sure. My righteous score of 19 is more points than the Broncos scored in the Super Bowl, so I'm doing ok.
  6. The reclusive developer of "Flappy Bird” made over $50,000/day in ad revenue and decided to remove the game from app stores because the money and exposure were ruining his simple life. I admire his priorities.
  7.  I'm starting to believe philosophy that triathlon training is pretty much just a series of arguments between the part of your brain that wants to stop and the part that wants to keep going.
  8. Tennis elbow sucks.
  9. It was confirmed this week that spilling a full beer is the adult equivalent of letting go of a balloon.
  10. After reading an article about a couple that was married for 67 years and died just hours apart, my wife and I made a pact to be that couple. Only 50 years to go.
  11. “Blazing Saddles” has the honorable distinction of being the first movie with a fart noise in it.
  12. Another question my youngest asked me that I can’t answer, “What language do dogs think in?”
  13. I really wish the Lego movie theme song; “Everything is Awesome” would leave my house…….forever.
  14. I would have bet good money that the majority of the Lego movie was stop motion animation.....this is why I don't gamble.  http://bit.ly/LQWJ2I
  15. A company called Studio Diip has created a motorized go-cart - for aquarium-bound fish. Yes, you can view the insanity here: http://bit.ly/1gnboMT
  16. “Shinola” was a brand of shoe polish that was available until 1960. The brand name was purchased in 2008 and now is manufacturer of overpriced watches, bicycles, leather goods, and journals ($225 for a wallet, $65 for pencil pouch – really?). There, you now know it from the “other” stuff.
  17. Researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm found that there are 177,147 different ways to tie a “standard” tapered business tie. I know three – I have some learning to do.
  18. If prisoners took their own mug shots they would be called, "cellfies".
  19. You’re not considered late to a meeting if you brought donuts.
  20. According to my middle daughter, zooming in really fast in Google Earth is excellent practice for skydiving.
  21. My teenagers refer to “shivering” as “being on accidental vibrate mode”.
  22. The theme from “Gilligan’s Island” can be sung to the tune of “Amazing grace”. I have no idea how you use this piece of information.
  23. Famous snowboarder, “Shawn White” is a member of the Zipper Club – membership is exclusive to those who have had open heart surgery.  His surgeries occurred before age one.
  24. According to my youngest, it’s not wise to let a dog watch your food.
  25. According to the "laws" of physics, a planet the shape of a donut (or toroid for geometry geeks), could actually exist.
