What I Learned This Week - 11/29/13

  1.  The term "glamazon" refers to an attractive woman that is extremely tall.
  2. The Verizon commercial for their array of tablets for the holidays gets funnier every time I see it. I have lost track of the number of times I've used their line, "accessing brain information" in meetings.
  3. Not all phone calls received at work are a form of drama.
  4. Best comment I've received by someone reviewing a report I've written, "every time you make a typo, the errorists win".
  5. There is such a thing as a champagne vending machine. I have no idea why this surprises me.
  6. Ad agencies are finally using my kind of tech. British Airways launched its first interactive roadside billboard that depicts an animated little girl pointing at aircraft flying over head (actual overhead and not on the billboard) telling  drivers passing by if the plane is a British Airways flight and where the plane is headed. I can't wait for this to come to DIA so I no longer have to answer that question from my kids.
  7. Whenever I see that my car has ice covering the windshield my inner IT guy surfaces, "Windows frozen? Did you try ctrl+alt+del? How about turning it off and on again?"
  8. Everyone needs a Dalek soundboard for meetings.
  9. I wish I was smart enough to decrypt at least one of Cicada 3301’s puzzles.
  10. After kicking stage 3 ovarian cancer’s butt, Jenn Sommermann, a massage therapist from New York, decided she would complete 50 triathlons in 50 states before she turned 50 and raise $100,000 for ovarian cancer research. On Sunday, she will start her 50th triathlon. She’s raised over $100K and secured a spot on my list of people that are actual superheroes.
  11. I witnessed a woman in the gym proving a friends point that there are actually people who don't know how to wear cycling shorts. For instance this woman didn't know the padding on cycling shorts is to be worn with the padding on the inside of the short.
  12. My default joke answer for technical questions this week is, "carbon nanotubes". Most people responded with a pause and thought I was serious.
  13. I will never be able to erase the visual of a twerking turkey with Miley Cyrus’s head.
  14. There is a distinct feeling of satisfaction and warmth that a house full of family brings.
  15. My youngest is very proud that her name in Spanish sounds very similar to an English slang word for "butt".
  16. My day will be a little "off" if I don't have coffee from my favorite mug.
  17. It's sad that we now have a generation before us that has never heard the phrase, "Get off the phone, I need to use the internet."
  18. I can't believe "Sharknado" is still a big deal in my household.
  19. Thanks to the smart phone and special apps, all Thanksgiving discussion now have a two minute silence period for fact checking.
  20. In my household, Thanksgiving fact checking is not a race - but it often feels like one.
