What I Learned This Week - 7/15/16

  1.  517 days until Star Wars - Episode VIII is in theaters 
  2. My kids find the fact that I had a perm in high school very funny, but not quite as funny as their grandfather having one at the same time. #LikeFatherLikeSon
  3. Nothing confirms how fast time passes than looking at photos of yourself when you were your kid’s age and remembering the details of event in the photo like it happened yesterday. #HolyCow
  4. Three of the most popular computer programs for interpreting body-scanning imaging (fMRI) were found to have statistical error that will likely invalidate 40,000 neuroscience studies. #OhJam
  5. Instead of “Once upon a time”, Korean folk tales begin with, “When Tigers Used to Smoke”.

  7. It was recently pointed out to me that Star Wars is basically, the series of stories about kids breaking their dad’s stuff. #truth
  8. The Pokémon Go app is already more popular than Tinder, which happens to be another app used to find monsters in your area. 
  9. Most users of Pokémon Go app are unaware that using their Google account for the app allows full access their Google account data, including reading and sending emails on their behalf, opening and deleting Google drive documents, viewing private Google photos and searching data, among other things. #CanNotWill
  10. A 19-year-old man once nearly died from drinking a quart of Soy Sauce and now holds the record for highest blood sodium level ever measured without brain damage (196 mmol/L).
  11. A “Norman Door” is a door that requires signage to tell users whether they should push or pull to open it, since that core function is not visibly obvious from the design. #FarSideCartoon #BadDesign
  12. Frosted Pop Tarts have on average 10 fewer calories than unfrosted ones. #ThinnerCrust
  13. The holes (aka “docker holes” in Pop Tarts are a purposeful design feature that allow steam to be released during cooking and prevent the pastry from being soggy.

  15. A British man lived for 121 days in a room filled with snakes to break the Guinness World Record, only to find out the record was no longer being maintained. #Doh
  16. The collective term for nieces and nephews is "niblings".
  17. Scientists at the University of Washington have created a human-like robotic hand that can learn on its own. #ThingIsReal #ThisIsHowTerminatorStarted
  18. The Caribbean “Mountain Chicken” (Leptodactylus fallax) is actually a species of frog. #Ba-Gawk
  19. According to a co-worker, if you are ever too embarrassed to purchase something at a store, buy a birthday card with it. #SheHasADrawerFullOfCards
  20. All 10 teams in the peloton of the Tour De France that do not have backing from one of the major drivetrain makers buy Shimano parts. #ItJustWorks
  21. Many riders in the Tour De France have special super-realistic covers on their shoes that give the appearance they are wearing team sponsored shoes, when in fact they are not. #Lies
  22. Tour De France race officials use magnetic resonance testing and thermal cameras to check for “mechanical doping” (aka “tiny electric motors”) in race bike frames and wheels.
